Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said yesterday that he is “sticking to my legitimacy as president of all Egyptians”, adding that he does not recognise his trial.
According to the Anadolu Agency, Morsi was speaking during his hearing at the Cairo Criminal Court where he is being tried for espionage along with ten defendants. The case was adjourned.
“I am still insisting that the court lacks the jurisdiction that enables it to prosecute me,” he said, “as I have said in the first hearing, I am rejecting the trial, not the court.”
“I am the president of all Egyptians and I have never met with any Brotherhood committee since I came to office in June 2012.”
Morsi is the first freely elected Egyptian president. He took office in June 2012 only to be ousted by a military coup in July 2013.
In addition to the espionage case, Morsi has already been sentenced to death, 25 and 20 years in jail in three other cases.
