Tunisia extends state of emergency for another month

February 22, 2016 at 2:36 pm

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi on Sunday extended the state of emergency for another month, Anadolu news agency reported.

“After consulting with the prime minister and the speaker of the parliament on security issues, the situation at the borders and in the region as a whole, the president of the republic has decided once again to declare a state of emergency for a month, starting from 22 February 2016,” the Tunisian presidency said in a brief statement.

The Tunisian president first declared the state of emergency on 24 November after a suicide attack targeting a bus carrying presidential guards in Tunis led to the deaths of twelve security personnel.

In December, Essebsi extended the state of emergency for another two months.
