Some 20 detainees continued their hunger strike in the Al-Aqrab Prison for the sixth day in protest against the mistreatment they suffer in prison and the inability of their families to visit them as well as the assaults which their family members have been subjected to.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Association of Al-Aqrab Prison Detainees’ Families said that a number of leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood group are taking part in the strike, noting that it began on 24 February.
It explained that the hunger strike “came after two weeks of insults and attacks against the families of detainees during their visits, as they were prevented from entering for normal visits since the 10 February.”
The group said a senior Egyptian official had visited the hunger strikers and threatened them, demanding they end their strike. The prisoners refused.
The Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate reported that nine journalists begun a strike on 24 February. It reported on the deterioration of their health.
