You start the journey but the boat is about to capsize
Since the beginning of this year, more than 1,750 people have perished in the Mediterranean trying to escape poverty and war & according to the International Organisation for Migration this is more than 30 times higher than the same period in 2014. The Italian search-and-rescue operation, Mare Nostrum, was stopped in October and replaced by the lesser EU force, Triton. Mare Nostrum covered 27,000 square miles of sea while the new force operated by the EU border agency Frontex, extends to just 30 miles off the Italian coast. If your boat does capsize, your chances of survival are not particularly high.
After days of travelling in an over-packed dingy, you can see a storm approaching. You know that your boat weighs too much to safely survive the storm. Some of your fellow passengers think that the best option is to throw away all the fresh water supply on the boat, in a bid to weather the storm and reach Europe.
